Congratulations, Nkem Nonyel!

Since entering pharmacy school, Nkem has spent years educating many in underserved communities in Maryland about diseases prevalent in those communities. She was instrumental in bringing keynote speakers to the 2013 SNPhA Black History Month Forum and Health Disparity Forum. She almost single-handedly organized and promoted these activities to her classmates so that they could learn about the implications and effects of health disparities on all citizens of the State of Maryland. Also, with Nkem’s leadership from 2010-12, SNPhA helped host a health fair at the Baltimore Lexington Market that served a large number of underrepresented patrons. At the health fair, students discussed hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, the “Power to End Stroke”, immunization, and poison control. In November and December 2012, Nkem participated in the Walgreens’ and SNPhA’s HIV/AIDS Community Outreach and the National Kidney Foundation KEEP screening events. Each event was geared towards educating underserved patients and providing minorities the opportunity to interact with minority pharmacists.

Nkem is concurrently completing a Master of Public Health degree (Global Health concentration) from the University of Maryland, School of Medicine, Masters of Public Health Program. Following graduation, she intends to continue to impact the health of the underserved community through volunteering. Nkem is a highly motivated, passionate individual who goes above an beyond to serve the mission of SNPhA and MPhS. It is with great pride that we award her with the society's $1,000 scholarship!
